Saint John - The Birthplace of NBYO

The New Brunswick Youth Orchestra (NBYO) has deep roots in Saint John thanks to its founder Philip Oland, a patron of the arts, and former chairperson and CEO of Moosehead Breweries. Mr. Oland was a committed community leader. He founded the Greater Saint John United Way,helped establish UNB Saint John, and he played a key role in the efforts to restore the Imperial Theatre. Today young classical musicians from across New Brunswick are most grateful for Mr. Oland's leadership in establishing…

Hello Uptown Saint John!

Did you know that the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra was founded in Saint John in 1965 by Phillip Oland? In fact, the NBYO is the first provincial youth orchestra in Canada.

Today there are 20 Saint John area young musicians in the 80-member orchestra. Ranging in age from 12-22, the members are from french and english communities across New Brunswick.

We are coming home to Saint John on Sunday, February 24th for two concerts at the Imperial Theatre. It's our annual collaboration concert with a special guest artist.

In the past few years, we've partnered with the swing standards of Jill Barber, the rhythmn and blues of Matt Anderson, and even hip hop with Radio Radio. This year we play outlaw country with the award-winning The Divorcees.

It's an exciting and maybe even a little dangerous musicial collaboration - Outlaws & Oboes!

Hope to see you there.

January 28, 2015 at 9am to January 31, 2015 at 5pm
New Brunswick was created out of the western portion of Nova Scotia in 1784 as a result of the American War of Independence. Many had opposed rebellion. More than 500,000 of these Tories or Loyalists existed at one time or another but most chose to remain part of American society. For others, at least 60,000, exile was the only alternative. In 1783, over 30,000 boarded vessels in New York for Nova Scotia and nearly half of these came to what is now New Brunswick in spring, summer and fall…See More

1812: The New Brunswick Story exhibition at the New Brunswick Museum at New Brunswick Museum, 1 Market Square, Saint John, NB, E2L4Z6

January 28, 2015 at 9am to January 31, 2015 at 5pm
On June 18, 1812 the United States declared war on Britain and placed His Majesty’s colonies in British North America (now Canada) in peril. Already fighting a life and death struggle with Napoleon, Britain had no desire for a conflict on two fronts. The United States, on the other hand, felt their young independence threatened by a British embargo on American trade with France, the seizure of British deserters on U.S. vessels at sea and action to prevent American westward expansion. The war…See More

January 23, 2015 at 9am to January 25, 2015 at 5pm
New Brunswick artist Carol Taylor continues her exploration of the interaction between geological processes and human presence. The exhibition is the further development of artistic concepts first shown at the NBM in 2011. In the original exhibition, Carol Taylor conceived of Future Fossils as artworks that considered the continuum of geological processes in combination with vestiges of human presence. An aspect of her inquiry was inspired by a group of antique and vintage tools from her own…See More
