New Brunswick was created out of the western portion of Nova Scotia in 1784 as a result of the American War of Independence. Many had opposed rebellion. More than 500,000 of these Tories or Loyalists existed at one time or another but most chose to remain part of American society. For others, at least 60,000, exile was the only alternative.
