The Saint John Learning Exchange's Blog (8)

This is Amanda's story.....

The Learning Exchange is the best thing for anyone who has given up hope, who thought there wasn’t a light at the end of the tunnel.  I had given up hope then I found a light at The Saint John Learning Exchange.

I have been going through some really tough times lately but nobody has given up on me.  My teacher is the one who pushes me on when I feel like giving up on my dreams.  I want to get my GED but there is always something stopping me.  Here people support you.  They…

This is Ricky's story.....

I have been attending evening classes at the Saint John Learning Exchange for almost a year. I am attending this class so I can read and spell words to my kids. It will be real nice to get my GED too. It would make me feel more of a dad and a man.

Public school was very hard for me because at the time I could not read or spell at all. Later on when I got older some of it came to me, but now in my classroom I feel real good and in the end I will get my GED. Life was really…

This is Yvon's story.....

The Learning Exchange did change my life. I am a 48 year old male with an 8th grade education. Before I decided to go back to school I always had a hard time to find a good paying job.

When I was younger I did have a chance to go and finish my grade 12. It was at the tech in Moncton N.B. I got there the first day and they gave me some books, and I was on my own with no help from the teacher. At the Learning Exchange the teachers are willing to work with you one on one.…

This is Mark's story.....

I took an important step to increase my knowledge on the nine Essential Skills required for success in today’s workplace.  The TIES 2 Work Program did just that.  This twelve week program taught me how to work as a TEAM, a team that was happy and productive.  The program also provided me the knowledge to interact with various age groups, personalities, and cultures.  It also helped me know what my levels were in the Essential Skills and bring them to what was required for my job placement. …

This is Vic's Story.......

The Learning Exchange has changed my life in many ways. The program has allowed me to believe in myself and prompted me to try and successfully pass my G.E.D. The course has also given me the courage and confidence to talk to people about a grade 12 certificate. Since I have been coming to classes I have realized that there are possibilities.

Before coming to the Saint John Learning Exchange I was on a dead-end road. I did not believe in myself and was not…

This is Sarah's story.....

The Learning Exchange is very dedicated to teaching adults.  I tell you this because I am one of those students who just keep coming back eager to learn.  I never used to like school and the whole learning stuff until I discovered the Learning Exchange.  I have changed in so many positive ways.  I am pleased with myself, and of course very pleased I chose the Learning Exchange to be my teacher.

I never liked school.  I never liked the classroom style.  I was always…

March 27, 2015 at 9am to March 29, 2015 at 5pm
On June 18, 1812 the United States declared war on Britain and placed His Majesty’s colonies in British North America (now Canada) in peril. Already fighting a life and death struggle with Napoleon, Britain had no desire for a conflict on two fronts. The United States, on the other hand, felt their young independence threatened by a British embargo on American trade with France, the seizure of British deserters on U.S. vessels at sea and action to prevent American westward expansion. The war…See More

The Lost War: 1776-1783 exhibition at the New Brunswick Museum at New Brunswick Museum, 1 Market Square, Saint John, NB, E2L4Z6

March 27, 2015 at 9am to March 29, 2015 at 5pm
New Brunswick was created out of the western portion of Nova Scotia in 1784 as a result of the American War of Independence. Many had opposed rebellion. More than 500,000 of these Tories or Loyalists existed at one time or another but most chose to remain part of American society. For others, at least 60,000, exile was the only alternative. In 1783, over 30,000 boarded vessels in New York for Nova Scotia and nearly half of these came to what is now New Brunswick in spring, summer and fall…See More
