With a lovely accent and fine tastes, the distinguished and genuine Colin Smith is a very talented man. You may run into him at Scheherazade Book & Music on Prince William Street, or helping Anne out at The Feel Good Store on Germain; and he is a gem. A little chat with Colin:
Where were you born?
Kent, England during World War II
Where do you work?...and for how long?
I've had several careers but I've been working as a self-employed artist, writer and designer for over 30 years.
What was your favourite/most interesting project?
The interior of the Legislative Assembly Chamber in Fredericton (I co-designed it with architect Bob Power).
What do you like best about uptown Saint John?
Our cool climate -- bring on the fog. I love it!
Who is your favourite artist/musician??
Depends on my mood. I'm into classical and jazz for music and abstract and impressionist painting.
What place on earth inspires you?
I'm an urban type of guy so there are many cities that inspire but Paris and London come to mind right away.
Secret indulgence?
Something fresh-baked and sweet!
Do you have any pets?
Not right now.
What do you like to eat for breakfast?
Very British -- tea (China Oolong), toast and marmalade (I make it myself every January)
What is your favourite drink?
Right now -- Starbucks for a large Organic Tazo chai tea -- two bags please and room for dairy.

Hmm - they all have their charms
Do you have a nickname?
Not that I know of!
Favourite quote?
Arthur Erickson -- "Everything has potential."
What is your favourite hangout uptown?
My studio on Germain Street.
What book are you reading right now?
Love's Civil War -- letters and diaries from Elizabeth Bowen and Charles Ritchie.
What is your favourite thing to wear?
Something navy blue.
Describe yourself in three words.
Only three! Well, I'm quite complicated -- an emotional, passionate, introverted -- artist!
