SARAH JOHNSON . UPTOWN SAINT JOHN COTW . APRIL 19-23

Sarah Johnson is a jewel for uptown Saint John. She is both talented and professionally trained in dance, theatre, yoga, and coreography. Let's find out a little more...

Where were you born?
I was born in Oakville, Ontario, but don't hold it against me! I moved to Saint John when I was 4, so I consider myself a true Maritimer!

Do you have any formal training?
Yes. I trained here at Port City Dance Academy and then went on to Ryerson University for the Theatre/Dance program and have since been training, dancing and choreographing.

What was your breakthrough moment/favourite performance?
It was a recent performance. I'm working with two great dance artists from Columbus, Ohio and we had a work in progress showing last summer. At the end of the show, our audience stayed and spoke about the work, about dance, they had alot to say about dance! It was very exciting to see how a work of dance could excite a Saint John audience. I think it was a breakthrough and my favourite performance, so far!

Where do you work?...and for how long?
I run around the city, sharing dance, movement and yoga to all age groups and walks of life! I teach at The Yoga Outlet, Port City Dance Academy and Interaction Children's Theatre. I also do regular dance classes and rehearse, presently with the artists from Columbus, but also with local professional dancers.

What do you like best about uptown Saint John?
I love being able to walk everywhere; to work, to meet friends, to do class, get food, go for dinner, get drinks.....everything I need is right here!

Who is your favourite musician?
Tom Waits. Clever fellow, always entertaining and wonderfully talented.

What place on earth inspires you?
Here. Saint John has so much potential, there are so many possibilities, that's why I came back. To be part of the excitement of building and developing an even larger arts community.

Do you have any pets?
I have two cats, Charlie 'Bird' Parker and Thelonius Monk, two great jazz artists and two great cats!

What do you like to eat for breakfast?
I'm rather dull when it comes to breakfast, I eat cereal everyday except for Sunday, when someone else cooks me breakfast!

Spring? Summer? Winter? Fall?
I like the imbetween seasons, when you're anticipating the next season and you're happy the previous season is ending.

Do you have a nickname?
Depends on who you talk to.

Favourite quote?
" I'm a junkie for the written word" - Wonder Boys- Michael Chabon

What is your favourite hangout uptown?
Churchills' pub, late at night and Happinez, anytime!

What book are you reading right now?
I was reading a Michael Chabon book, "The Adventures of Cavalier and Clay" and for my other side, "Meditations for the Mat". A wise man gave me that one.

What is your favourite thing to wear?
Dance clothes. It doesn't matter if they match or look good, as long as they're comfy and you can move, that's all that counts!

Describe yourself in three words.
